Heavenly Biscuits

1 tablespoon instant dry yeast (1 package)
1/4 cup warm water
2 1/2 to 3 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons sugar
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup buttermilk

Dissolve yeast in warm water. Set aside. In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 1/2 cups four with baking powder, salt, and sugar. Mix well. Cut in the shortening with a pastry blender. Stir in buttermilk, then yeast mixture. Blend thoroughly. Add only enough of the remaining flour to make a soft dough. (You can refrigerate the dough at this point to use later...up to 3 days) Knead dough lighly on a floured surface. Roll out about 1/2 inch thick and cut. Place on a lightly greased baking sheet. Let biscuits rise for 15 to 20 minutes. Heat oven to 400 degrees F. Bake until lighly browned. Makes about 15 large biscuits.

Note: I love these because they look a little nicer and don't have the baking powder flavor that many biscuits have.
